Just a thought: Remove constant icon size from proper system file and replace current app icons with differently sized icons may can make it possible. Try it.
Well if this idea is developed further and made possible, we could have dynamic icons like those for ip address being adapted to suit say calendar's upcoming events...that would give us widget like functionality too...
