well restoring settings didn't work, terminal still shows the same as above, and the issue remains.

I'm in the same boat: all contacts and history just vanished. Hoping to avoid a reset...

I've gotten lost in this conversation, completey turned around and confused by it. Someone on twitter tried to help by telling me to delete user-dirs.dirs and user-dirs.local from /home/user/.config, but I have no /home/user/.config. No .config in /home/user/

I'm not worried about losing contacts; mine are in mfE too. But I am concerned about losing some other things...

no .config ? that doesnt sound right oO well in my case my images and stuff weres till there just my phone didn't show them . in that case just try to sync your device with your pc and get everything you want out of it , like pictures, music, videos, downloaded files and all that .. in my case everything told here like using nero to change something in cat /home/user/.config didn't work and all that so i had to do the full reset but got all my pics and music back, just apps, contacts & conversations were lost.

So it happened now to me also, unfortunately I cannot blame anyone else except myself

I was playing around encrypting my MyDocs and trying to get it to work correctly when mounting/unmounting the partition through USB to external computer.

I had some problems on finding my music on the default player, so I tried to restart tracker and by mistake did the dreaded "tracker-control -r"

I suppose I am doomed now, have I lost all my contacts and message for good, right?
I do have some backups but they are not really that recent. Will have to look into it...

juiceme if you have backups, the folder is "organizer" IIRC that contains the messages and contacts...Are you sure you never backed up contacts into /home/user/MyDocs/Contacts?

I do have some backups.

I did previously make a partial backup by editing the .backup files and removing some things I didn't need to restore.
I will have to try something like that again.

I am quite sure most of my contacts are in backups, but latest messages are propably ashes in the wind...

Okay, now I got down to trying the restore.

There are 3 zips in the backup directory which I think may contain the contacts and SMS/MMS messages I am missing, namely contacts.zip, messaing.zip and organizer.zip.

When I compare the file sizes from last backup I made, I can see that "contacts and "organizer" are larger in the earlier backup and "messaging" is smaller.

Code:
~/MyDocs/.backups $
~/MyDocs/.backups $ ls -la Backup5/contacts.zip Backup6/contacts.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 user root 2436337 Aug 28 12:05 Backup5/contacts.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 user root 1309930 Oct 2 18:25 Backup6/contacts.zip
~/MyDocs/.backups $
~/MyDocs/.backups $ ls -la Backup5/messaging.zip Backup6/messaging.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 user root 909981 Aug 28 12:05 Backup5/messaging.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 user root 1303763 Oct 2 18:26 Backup6/messaging.zip
~/MyDocs/.backups $
~/MyDocs/.backups $ ls -la Backup5/organizer.zip Backup6/organizer.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 user root 78337 Aug 28 12:05 Backup5/organizer.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 user root 26762 Oct 2 18:26 Backup6/organizer.zip
~/MyDocs/.backups $
