Hmm, actually I was thinking of using left-right swipe the same way it is on Harmattan(language change). Though that could be made configurable

the gestures I mention start on a letter and go away from it for a length of a few more letters. Harmattan's swipe to change layout is a long swipe from outside the screen. So they don't conflict between them.

For the media player issue it's better to fix Open Media Player instead, while searching contacts in desktop portrait seems a bit of corner case.

Using proximity sensor sounds a bit too much to me.

By the way I really like Mallit keyboard layout, both in portrait and landscape. It's great in the N9 and definitively better than Opera's.

ok, ok, I give up on proximity sensor

re maliit - N9 has bigger screen than N900, bear that in mind. Anyone used it on N900?

They got about the same width (due to the different aspect ratios) which is offsetted by the increased accuracy that the resistive screen on the N900 has.

Btw I have used it for a little while both on nemo and on maemo and it is usable. The most annoying thing about the portrait vkb is the edit window. It should be split screen imo, not overlay. The nokia im system allows split screen keyboard (see the stylus keyboard on Diablo). This is something worth exploring.

Maybe this could be achieved with an applet instead of the proximity sensor.

If its possible to move the shift key to the bottom row then this is my mockup with a key for comma, question mark etc.
    forgive my horrible photoshopping skills.

Thank you for this mockup, but
no, it is not possible to move the shift key. Both, the upper
layout and the bottom row are managed by two different
    components.

By the way. I still could not figure out how rendering the
sliding keys work or why it does not work in the reverse enginered
    version.

Well, it is pretty possible that I've introduced some bug in the process of RE. Could you share some more details so I can look at the issue?
