So I accidentally formatted /home/user through gparted on vmware.
If I mount in windows I get an empty 27gb empty fat32 partition.
If I unplug it and use the file manager on N900, all the files are still there. Media player still plays the files, all my images are still viewable.

But if I mount, the partition is empty. If I SFTP, /home/user is empty also.

What's going on? Should it not be- empty on the phone? Why can I still use the files on the N900 but no where else?

Quick reply...
If you open X Terminal on N900, what do you get from the command?
Code:
ls /home/user
Best wishes.

I would insert a MMC and save your files before it's too late...

and if you connect MyDocs in linux based os, still no files? Windows is known to fail sometimes when removable media has more than 1 partition

MyDocs
/home/user/MyDocs shows all my old files, too.
Mounted in windows /or/ accessed with an sftp client, MyDocs is empty (27gb partition empty on windows).

I already "backed up" my files to my sd card by doing a cp.

It seems if I mount /dev/sdX /mnt, the files are there but /dev/sdX1 /mnt it's empty. The partition is also ntfs.

This is what I was going to do. I'm more curious as to what is happening, why the N900 is still seeing all the files, why are there two 27gb magic partitions, etc.

Also, if I cp on the N900 to MyDocs it tells me it's set to read only

/home is a seperate partition from MyDocs. You probably formatted that, so your documents (if I am right) should be safe. On the other hand /home contains a lot of useful files like application settings and apllications themselves. (/home/opt is mounted to /opt) so I am curious how your N900 even boots. This is probably the reason that windows cant see your files, something is missing. If ls -a doesnt show lots of folders starting with a dot (means you probably formatted /home), do a reflash.

All the hidden files in /home/user are still there.
I had the N900 connected to my computer and formatted the 27gb with gparted.

I'll take some screenshots.

Code:
Nokia-N900:/home# ls -a
. .. developer lost+found opt user

If I mount /dev/sdb all my files are accessible, if I mount /dev/sdb1 I get the empty partition.

you may be missing the autorun.inf in Mydocs and the other files necessary for windows to identify your phone's contents

Guys, first things first - did you want your MyDocs partition to be NTFS-formatted? If not, reformat it using FAT32 and reflash.

Also, which version of SSU do you have - 1.2, 1.3.1, CSSU Stable, CSSU Testing?
