I thought about answering, but honestly I CBA anymore after reading the whole thread.
There's a rather decent (I'd say and hope) wikipage about CSSU with proper install instructions and even a link to FAQ and all.
So far we had really few complaints about any problems on installing CSSU by strictly following those instructions.

Please note there's no other alternative installation method supported besides the one explained in detail on CSSU wiki page liked above!
HTH, I'm out again.

I haven't really seen a need for it yet. My N900s already have pretty much everything I want, just with PR1.3. I'm not into portrait mode; really, the only time I hold the thing vertically is when I've got it up against my ear. I don't know exactly what all bugs are currently fixed by CSSU, but the programs I run haven't been crashing or acting up. I get decent uptimes, and battery life is fine.

In short, I don't really see a burning need to update my system right now.

Edit: I've gotta admit, though, that I do want to try out the thumb support soon.

Portrait mode is a popular negligibility of CSSU. First and foremost CSSU is about bugfixes that should but don't get published as genuine Nokia maemo update (http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU#What_is_it.3F) and it's meant for all users, not only for portrait-mode-lovers (http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU#Whom_is_it_for.3F
Since the release of the stable branch CSSU-S is meant to be the LongTermSupport hotspot for all N900 users/owners.

And yet, it's the part of CSSU that has gotten the most publicity. (And the part that affects me the most -- my Pierogi app uses the landscape lock, but of course that is ineffective in CSSU...)

Oh, absolutely! I'm just saying that I don't seem to be severely affected by any bugs at the moment, even using PR1.3.

Landscape lock is not ineffective by default. Forced rotation must be enabled in transitions.ini. I agree that it's potentially annoying for application developers, who may receive complaints about UI layouts not functioning correctly in portrait mode (where the user has enabled forced rotation), when the application is only intended to be used in landscape.

We (CSSU-devels/maintainers) are working on a solution quite convenient for app developers. For now there's blacklist in transitions.ini where user could add the apps that don't play nice in portrait mode. It's planned to move this to more generic locations that can easily get deployed in the app dpkg (e.g a special key "X-maemo-rotation=landscape-only" in .desktop file of app).

On a sidenote: in CSSU-S portrait mode is off by default, user has to explicitly enable it.
