I really don't want to come off as being snobby, but one shouldn't obtain root on a whim as they would candy from a store. If the instructions are very confusing or cryptic, I recommend taking a live distribution of Linux such as Knoppix or Ubuntu, booting into it, and playing around in the commandline for a little bit. Learning a bit of Linux is only a bonus, and if the patience to sit down for an hour on a weekend isn't there, screwing around as root is a great ticket to bricking your 770.

Words of wisdom, that. It's not a question of if you are going to break your first Linux sandbox, but when. And rebooting a live CD sure beats the pants off reflashing and (partly) restoring your 700, or (god forbid) going through an entire Linux-to-disk reinstall... :-)

Even though I'm a far cry from guru level, let me just put it this way. Pooching your only harddrive partition while mucking around as root under Slackware *isn't* fun.

I need some assistance. I was following the directions using the Unbuntu for flasher to get the Nokia into R&D mode, but when I get to the part to connect the Nokia, the Windows OS prompts for nokia 770 (host) drivers to be installed. Does anyone have this issue, or know the way around it. I tried connecting my Nokia when it is on, to the system, and can swap files, but the flasher states that the device is not suitable.

I figured that the rs-mmc was the problem, and it corrected the Windows OS from not connecting to the device. Without the rs-mmc in the 770, it says VMware USB device connected. However, I still get the USB device not suitable, waiting message in the VMware window.

Any ideas as to what to do? What am I missing?

install ssh (using the "red pill" mode, described in the maemo wiki)
open xterm
ssh root@127.0.0.1
(you should know the root password by now)
