from personal experience, it doesn't have to be digitizer. I had a similar behaviour, took it to the service centre and the most obvious reason was a digitizer. Guy there told me to wait and that they will replace it right away. It was done in 30 minutes and it was fine at the moment. But a couple days later the issue came back. So I took it there again and they called me the next day to tell me that they have to replace the motherboard. It was done in 4 or 5 days and I got new 2 years warranty. But after 2 months the issue came back. This time they kept the phone for more than 2 weeks, web status was "waiting for the part" and when it was fixed a guy there told me that it was actually LCD that was broken. The touchscreen controler is on the display, not on the digitizer nor the motherboard. And it's been over a year since than and it's working fine.
