Sure this works. Take a look at our approach in PirateBox. Long story short create a svg icon, define areas with ids, create a dedicated listener in your application (or watch dbus for signals) and on signal sed the values into your svg file.

Anyway, I'll take a look at Piratebox.
I mean I guess it would be a great idea. The problem would be implementing it for the natively installed apps of the phone, if that is where the direction of this topic is to go towards.
I don't know how hard it would be to implement some sort of universal listener for notifications, without modifying native apps' code. :P (not a dev here)
Anyone wanna do a reboot of the 1.3 and modify them for dynamic icons? XD
