What I am wondering, is why do they bother?
What do they gain by this?

There could be one way for them to earn money. Google could pay them not to release this or buy this ACL. Otherwise I think even if they would sell this for 5€, piracy would be too great for them to earn much.

OpenMobile ACL for webOS resurrected on Kickstarter, hopes to bring Android apps to HP Touchpad, http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/28/o...paign=Engadget

    Resurrection Spell Cast!
but seriously, this would be a God-send!

going to start looking into their opinion on MeeGo

I don't think its going to hit the goal, and even if it does I don't know the implications of it.

How long until it gets made?
Does it only affect Touchpad owners?
    Will it be open sourced?
    Any implications for Maemo/Mer/Sailfish?

Muhahaha - that's one of the biggest (and longest running) jokes! And the saddest part is: the webOS lunatics still believe in faith & hope that one day OM will come down and hand them an existing, real implementation! Nothing seems to get them on track with "real".

EDIT: and especially Phoenix International Communications - they promised huge blablas in manufacturing new webOS devices, or at least porting webOS to existing hardware at first. Fluffy jokes my *ss.

why not ? In the first two days they got around 11000$ and there is 23 days left . And they said around june-july the release . Personally I won't believe them until at least the product is released and working at a usable state because 2 and half year after first demo it's too little too late . But better late than never
