I've read through several other threads about people's desktop widgets disappearing. The difference in my case is that I cannot seem to replace them at all, whereas others seem to have only to re-locate them on the desktop.

My problem certainly stems from my last update, during which I believe I left extras-testing enabled. This was an accident. Just beforehand I was trying to work my way out of a dependency quandary I'd gotten myself into by previously having installed an experimental version of QT. Here is that:
Code:
[INSTALL] libmaliit1
[UPGRADE] qt-components-10 1.0~git20111014-1+0m5 -> 1.0-pre2-1+0m5
[INSTALL, DEPENDENCIES] libtelepathy-qt4-1
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-bearer
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-connectivity
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-contacts
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-declarative
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-feedback
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-gallery
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-location

[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-sensors
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-serviceframework
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-systeminfo
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] libqtm-12-versit
[UPGRADE] libqtm-12 1:1.2.0-0fn~fremantle3 -> 1:1.2.0+git20111104-0nd~fremantle5
Having successfully replaced that, I was ready to run an "aptitude safe-upgrade". Unfortunately I'd forgotten to disable the testing repository beforehand. Oops:

[UPGRADE] ttf-nokiapure 1.10-2 -> 1.152-1
I then disabled the testing repository and 'upgraded' once again, to available counterparts of the same versions from extras-devel:
Code:
[UPGRADE] callforwarding 1.0 -> 1.0
[UPGRADE] gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.9-2maemo2 -> 0.10.9-2maemo2
[UPGRADE] hildon-desktop-python-loader 0.1.0-1maemo3 -> 0.1.0-1maemo3

[UPGRADE] python-gst0.10 0.10.14-2maemo5 -> 0.10.14-2maemo5
[UPGRADE] python-hildondesktop 0.1.0-1maemo3 -> 0.1.0-1maemo3
[UPGRADE] stopish 0.9.3-1 -> 0.9.3-1
After a reboot, there was no amelioration on the widget front, so I decided to remove all third-party widgets, along with any native ones I'd never use while I was at it:
Code:
[REMOVE] battery
[REMOVE] bluezwitch
[REMOVE] callforwarding
[REMOVE] foreca-weather-applet
[REMOVE] google-search-widget
[REMOVE] gps-data-logger
[REMOVE] load-applet
[REMOVE] load-applet-ximagewsrc
[REMOVE] location-home-applet
[REMOVE] moonphase-home-widget
[REMOVE] osso-rss-feed-reader
[REMOVE] ovi-promotion-widget
[REMOVE] personal-gprs-mon
[REMOVE] personal-ip-address
[REMOVE] qmltube
[REMOVE, NOT USED] qt4-homescreen-loader
[REMOVE] sleeper
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] status-area-applet-tor
[REMOVE] stopish
[REMOVE] tor
After rebooting, only 'calendar', 'e-mail', "media player", and 'RSS'* remain under the "add widget" menu -- all native. But still no dice. Clicking on any of them yields no result.

* strangely enough, since I did remove osso-rss-feed-reader

Finally, I tried reinstalling packages related to hildon-desktop:
Code:
[REINSTALL] hildon-desktop
[REINSTALL] hildon-desktop-applet-settings-mr0
[REINSTALL] hildon-desktop-application-shortcuts-mr0
[REINSTALL] hildon-desktop-python-loader
Still no joy. ]-:

Any bright ideas, besides chastising my foolish error?
Thanks in advance.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle...

For no obvious reason, after losing batteries and rebooting once more, I'm again able to add desktop widgets. Wish I could tell you what the problem was, but I haven't the faintest idea. Thanks anyway.
