According to Japan's Daily Yomiuri, NTT DoCoMo is parterning with Samsung to develop phones running the open-source Tizen operating system, with the first handsets reaching the market next year. According to the Yomiuri, other mobile carriers are also getting behind the development of Tizen because they "fear the hegemony" of Apple and Google. We've heard about Tizen as far back as September of 2011 -- this Linux-based (and Intel-backed) software came about when Nokia's MeeGo OS bit the dust, and we've already seen evidence of a Tizen-based Galaxy S III.

Looking forward to Tizen. Jolla seems to release somthing as well. Now it comes to execution. Sailfish and tizen are still in hiding, and so is their hardware price and any other relevant information. While they are hiding, I'm looking forward to CES and hopping for a Hugh Galaxy note III or a Hugh keyboard device.

Given the state of Tizen at the moment, I can't say that I'm looking forward to this release any longer.

BB10, Jolla, Firefox OS are all higher on my list than Tizen.

It may not be the full MeeGo experience we (well me anyway) wanted but at least there will be some more competition in the market again.

    Good luck to them.

    Update:
Samsung confirms multiple Tizen phone launches in 2013

Talk of Samsung building a Tizen phone for non-developers has existed almost since the platform got started, but the company was silent on any definitive plans throughout 2012. It's speaking up this year: Samsung has confirmed to Bloomberg BusinessWeek that there's multiple "competitive" Tizen devices in the pipeline for 2013. While the firm unsurprisingly won't say what's involved, it's willing to say that the lineup will grow "depending on market conditions" -- in other words, it's watching early sales like a hawk. Does this mean a Galaxy S III with Tizen? A refined version of the developer device we saw last spring? At this stage, it might not matter when just having a major smartphone maker onboard is big news for a fledgling platform.

That is certainly good news. That makes me wish for a great keyboard device! to many cool stuff poring out from vendors now.

+1 to ranbaxy for scanning the web for tactical device information.

From the leaks I've seen samsung is turning tizen into touchwiz, just like bada. If this doesn't change I really don't care, yeah open sorce, but with that horrible gingerbread looking UI is not something to continue. They were an early look, but nothing interesting. I saw videos showing cool graphics, but they were cool graphics for the sake of it and not for function.

And if you look around you in the mobile world. Has it ever been a problem to sell?

Given than Ubuntu, BB10 and sailfish are going Qt/QML, and that Qt is no longer a Nokia thing, and Digia officially trying to get Qt on Android and iOS, the EFL choice for apps seems even more akward than at the time Tizen was created...
Well, html5 apps can still possibly be shared.
