After my last update from repositories and device restart the screen is totally messed up after the (icons, widgets etc.) and the device is unusable because of that (status bar/desktop are not accessible).

i tried reverting to my last backup but still got the same problem.
i think the hildon-desktop process is related to that somehow - after boot i am using SSH client console and see that the process was not started, so i started it myself (as root) and got "Aborted" output but i'm not sure if this is related.

Did anyone come across this issue? any ideas how to progress?

[EDIT] i can finally say that this is "hildon-desktop" process issue:
when my system starts - this process is not running. if i start it myself from x-term, the desktop, status bar and everything gets well.

question is - why has this process stopped running, and how should i make it run again on start up (where is the original place that tells maemo to start it)?

How are people supposed to help you answer questions, if those questions aren't even asked properly?

What did you update? What was the state of the device before update? What repo's have you enabled, etc. etc.

i believe the following question is quite clear:
"where is the original place that tells maemo to start it?" (the hildon- desktop process)

about the other things - i'm not sure which package was updated since there were quite a few - some of them of CSSU latest update (hildon-desktop was one of them if i remember correctly)

i have test and devel repositories as well as thumb.

i hope it helps, anyway - i believe the main issue is to find the main issue to investigate is to find the place where the OS gets the command to start this process and check what happened there.

/etc/init.d/hildon-desktop sounds like the most logical place to start looking.

    extras-testing / extras-devel, or cssu-testing / cssu-devel

I bet my *ss it results from an cssu-devel update. No issue, device boots in RD mode anyway.

(Don't do that when you are not prepared. )

So (just to confirm) you have cssu-testing ONLY, or also cssu-devel enabled?

this file hasn't changed on my device since 21/7/2010, so i guess it is not the cause.

what is calling it with the "start" parameter?

"/etc/init.d/hildon-desktop start" seems to work fine - hildon desktop is working fine after this is being executed.

however, when i kill "hildon-desktop" process, it is not being loaded automatically again.
