3rd option, take the working display from the new phone, and put it into the old phone for a while, take backups, and then switch display back to new unit.

So are you using a real linux or virtual machine inside a windows?
If you are running a real linux you might look what the dmesg command tells you after the phone boots the rescue image. There should be some lines about USB drives being detected, propably something like sdb (sdb1 sdb2 sdb3 ...)

If that happens, then you can mount the drives by hand, for example:
"mkdir n9_home; sudo mount /dev/sdb2 n9_home" and so on.

Then again, you could boot of another rescue image that allows you to telnet into the device and do the exports from there.

The same here. There is a notification of sucess, but fdisk does not reveal new drives. There are new ones under /dev but mounting them fails with statement that the drive does not exist.

Look up my postings today on the sticky topic on this forum, " [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9".
There are directions on how to boot up the device in repair mode and access it with telnet to manually export the partitions.
