Yes there are some issues to fix.
You can install the old version from the repos:

It seems I fixed the crash problem, anyone interested can test these packages.
I added to psx4m-gui another option to activated the "enhanced graphic hack", it should speed up the enhanced graphic (but may cause some glitch).

downloaded metal gear solid game. file format is .bin but whenever i try to open it screen goes black and nothing happens. What i'm doing wrong ?

edit: now games are working it was missing bios.bin file.

So where does one get info on what is working and what is not, and what is the best option and what is needed to install for playing a ps1 game.

You mean a game compatibility list? Most games work with pcsxrearmed and neon gpu.
Just try.

Most games run fine with pcsxrearmed, neon gpu and default settings.

can anybody tell why psx4m-gui do not support two player / pads?

can somebody add two player config to psxx4m-gui? that will be great to play with somebody in tekken 3
