OS2008 has a new program called Powerlaunch
This program has created some power ON/OFF problems yes.
After removing it, everything is fine again.

I agree with Quel on this. I run Linux on my desktop PC and it takes 20-30 seconds to shutdown. Allot of stuff happens during the shutdown like stopping services, cleanly unmounting filesystems, terminating all running applications.... On the internet tablet, the display is turned off early in the shutdown process. It continues shutting down for a while after the display blanks.
Wait 30 seconds after a shutdown before turning it back on. You turn it on with a long 4 - 5 second push on the power button. This design feature prevents the tablet from accidentally powering on in your pocket if the power button is bumped.

How about a one hour wait? Two hour wait? If it were only 30 seconds, then that would be great.

In my case, sometimes it's a 5 second wait, sometimes it's hours. And yes, I am holding down the power button.

This problem is not a failure on the part of the users, that they've not figured out that you need to hold the power button down, it's an acknowledged software/hardware compatibility problem that doesn't occur in all cases.

Since I got my n810 I have not had any problems, that is until last week after a software reflash. Now the tablet regularly has issues. I think it is pretty clear that this is a software problem, so perhaps it may be fixed one day.

So I did not post just to complain. I believe I have found a pretty consistent work around.

The solution (albeit ugly) is as follows:

step 1: for whatever reason you have shutdown

step 2: obviously, try at least once to power up as normal.

step 3: if it remains dead just put it down and plug in the power cord. The charging operation actually required a minimal startup in order to show the cute charging graphics. You will notice that after about 10 seconds the screen flickers a little and shows the icon with the word "charging".

step 4: You should now be able to power up normally.

N.B. I have had 100% success with this little fix. The obvious problem is doing this on the go (away from your charger). I have gotten this to work with all charging methods:

- OEM Power cord
- Car charger
- USB charging adapter
- Proporta gadget Power Pack.

It appears that the power cord can reliably trigger the minimal startup levels required for charging. Once at this point the button listener seems to function fairly well. I hope this helps out some of the frustration. This is clearly not a permanent solution but at least fills the need.

I am not sure if someone else already posted something similar but I did not find it searching, and thought it might help someone out.

Cheers

I've had to send back my first N800 device, because it was only possible to switch it on, when the battery was removed the 4 hours before.
I tried that a few times.
remove battery -> wait 3h -> battery inserted -> nothing
remove battery -> wait 4h -> battery inserted -> device starts

The charger wasn't able to start the device.

I have 2 n800s and have no problems of turning on/off.
I use the stylus and press HARD and hold it the left side of the on/off switch for a good
4 or 5 secs or until I see the the IT turns the light on.
It works 100% of the time but the time to wake up varies!

I've got TWO N800 so far with similar power won't on problem.(The 1st one I got on Jan. 11 from an online store(NCIX), I sent it back, paid the shipping myself, got the 2nd one on Feb. 4).
I don't understand why so many ppl having the similar problem yet no one make the complain to nokia. And simply sent your old one back can NOT solve the problem. You might end up getting another defective device just like me. And nokia canada really sucks. They don't even admit this existing problem. see what they said:
"we are unable to duplicate the problems you are experiencing with
your Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. Nokia does not comment on forums and
third party web site comments." Totally bureaucratic craps, and they asked me to send it to nokia US for repair, but they won't even send it back to canada after the fix because all n800 sold in canada are US model. I can only ask my friend in US to get it for me........
And I've contacted the retailer, they can only refund me for the device but I'll have to pay the shipping myself! I was so frustrated and angry and ............
I just checked the vote, out of 132 ppl, 55 have the similar power on problem, which is over 40%, yet nokia dosen't admit it!
So only if you guys all send a complain to nokia, it will take us customers seriously and try to find a fix quickly! And by the way, be careful about putting the device into a fridge, it'll void the warranty (I was told by a customer representative).

Or should we all try to file a group complain together?

By the way, for those considering buying N800, I highly recommend NOT to buy it, at least for now, it seems the whole batch(after 2008) is not right.

N800 arrived this morning. Charged it all day. Powered up/down a couple of times...no problem. Just tried to start the OS2008 upgrade process and it won't turn on. I feel like a jackass researching this thing for so long, then finally buying it, and now I'm sitting here with a brick. Great product.

Just let it sit for a while. I hear leaving it on the charger and waiting a bit will get it to start up in time, then you can turn it all the way on from there. It is not a brick, though. A brick will never work again without intervention from the manufacturer, this is not the case here.

Nokia is currently testing a fix that will be released with the next firmware update, so just leave the device on all the time in the meantime (use shutdown -r now to reboot if you need to)—the software fix will be here soon enough.

Or just 'reboot' (as root), which is a command that does basically the same as 'shutdown -r now'.
