I am thinking of getting Nokia 770 for reading pdf and webpages, mainly for its resolution. My hx4700's 640x480 screen is simply not fine enough.

Is the white color neutral (i.e. without serious tint compared with the most expensive monitor you can find) on 770?

How is the viewing angle on vertical and horizontal direction?

Thank you very much.

Got mine yesterday - regarding the screen - it is fantastically high res, but one thing IMO lets it down a little (I’d like to know if other people have noticed this.. )

I think it’s the layer that does the touch-sensitivity, it looks as though it’s adding some sort of odd polarisation or moire pattern over the screen - in simple terms this means that as you tilt the screen, you get an apparent ‘grain’ of rainbow-colours - particularly in bright/white areas. It has the overall effect of making photos look like they’re a lower resolution that the fantastic 800×480 screen underneath…

This is much less of an issue in documents/text etc as that is very obviously extremely detailed and text can be read when extremely small - I'll try loading up some Word docs in Abiword (.deb file installed without a hitch) and some PDFs of some requirements docs from work later on...

Don’t get me wrong - I’m making a total idiot of myself in the office acting like a kid-at-christmas now that it’s arrived (I was hitting refresh on the DHL page every 15mins for most of the day!!), and the screen is still awesome, but this point does let it down a little - what do other people think?

As for viewing angles - you can still make out the image looking almost end-on (i.e. there is no issue with viewing angle - you could certainly have several people crowded rounsd looking at the same image). This is in the horizontal direction - I have it in my bag and I'm pretending to work right now, so I'll check the vertical in my lunch break ;o)
(recall it's good though, just can't confirm exactly the range of angles it works perfectly over)

OK gtg, project manager just got back from a meeting and he sits behind me! ;o)

OK - had a look at the vertical - from looking at it head-on, you can tilt the top of the device away until it's pretty much horizontal (screen facing up) and still see the screen ok. Tilting the top towards you from head-on it starts to go dark/unreadable fairly quickly.

Looks to me like it's optimised in the vertical direction for all angles ranging from head-on to the device lying flat on the desk in front of you, and in the horizontal, it's viewable at pretty much all angles.

Seems like whoever designed this screen had exactly this application in mind - after all, I guess there will always be angles at which an LCD isn't optimal (though maybe not - I don't know the technicalities), but in this case Nokia or the subcontractor that made the screen have made sure that the only the angles at which you're never really going to view the device are affected.

Well anyway - be it a happy coincidence or impressive attention to detail in the design, the viewing angles are not an issue whatsoever.

(though see my comments about the slight moire/polaisation issue in my first reply.. anyone agree with me/see this too?)

That's great. On devices with small viewing angles, your two eyes will see different images, which is really painful!

So how's the color accuracy? I would like to hear a comparison between it and hx4700

Sort of late to chime in here, a year later but since I just got mine and it definitely has rather objectionable moire/patterning of the screen I wanted to confirm that at least one other person has it.

I'm not sure yet if it is a deal breaker or not - probably not, but we'll see how my eyes like it in the long run. It may not be a problem, but sort of a letdown when I expected screen nirvana and only got screen "well-I-guess-I-can-stand-it--maybe".

Yeah when you first get it and notice it, it's a big turn off. But eventually you won't even notice it hahah

The problem is that I wasn't planning on giving up my Pocket PC yet either, and every time I turn that on I now go "whoa!" over the super-clear screen and then when I go back to the 770 I go "ugh!" over the pattern.

I am convinced that the digitizer is what degrades the screen quality of the 770. If you look at a Palm T|X or TC, you see an incredibly vibrant screen without the mottled patterning that disturbs the 770; however, the accuracy of the Palm digitizer is not anywhere near that of the Nokia. If the clarity of the screen is an issue for you, then you will not be happy. Frankly, it is only noticeable when the screen is white or light.
