I think I have found a reason for this problem.

My sdcard slot doesn't recognise no microsd card anymore for several months. I just realize that it appeared when I lost the little magnet on the cover that maintain the tripod piece in place.
So I tried to put a magnet on the same place and voilą ! The sdcard appears now !

All I have to do is to find a magnet that fit the place in the cover...

HI EVERY BODY I ADDED A MICROSD FOR MY N900 IT WAS CONTAINING SOME FILES I COPIED SOME OF THEM WHEN I TRIED TO REMOVE THEME OR DO ANY THING TO /MYDOCS/IT APPEARS : READ-ONLY
NOW IT IS GONE BUT SOMETIMES IT RETURNES I SCANNED THE DEVICE WITH ANTIVIRUS BY MY PC BUT NOTHING BEEN FOUND PLZZ ANY ONE GOT AN IDEA OF THAT

My memory card did not work when I checked without inserting the back cover. Then I put the back cover and memory card started working.

Had same problem. Hardware fault on the cover sensor - NOT missing magnet.

Fixed it with attached.

DISCLAIMER - READ FIRST AND CONSIDER: I am not a programmer; I like to tinker. YMMV.
My phone is running kernel-power49 - the module was compiled accordingly. I have no idea whether it will work with other kernels including the default (couldn't see any difference in the source but I can't guarantee it). Please don't blame me if it bricks your phone!

After messing about for hours editing and recompiling kernels, I discovered that you only need one module.

****Rename attached file to omap_hsmmc.ko (forum wouldn't let me attach without changing extension)****

Copy the file to /lib/modules/current (as root) on your N900. Also copy to /lib/modules/<name of your kernel> - in my case : /lib/modules/2.6.28.10-power49

NB: I'm not actually sure it needs to go in both but I did just to make sure. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can advise.... ?

Reboot and VOILA: working mmc slot.

All I did was edit the source of the module to remove the cover checks. I only successfully completed this a few minutes ago but all seems well. I'll come back in a couple of days with an update.

It's a fairly crude hack and I might go back to it to see if it can be improved but I've spent far too much time recently farting around trying to keep this brilliant but seemingly delicate phone working adequately. I also have the communications error - currently fixed with some folded paper between the sim holder and battery.

Always greatly admired NOKIA stuff... never again!

it would have been great to see a screen shot of what ur talking about, to better understand how to get this problem resolved. been 4 days now, a couple of hard resets and still no memory card showing up on the n900

If you had that card in another Nokia phone, maybe you activated the SD Card password. When a card is broken, you will get an error sometimes. Try putting it back in the e71 and see if it works, if yes, you surely have the password on, remove it, and you're card will be seen on any other phone (warning, even the pc by stock is possible not to recognize the password locked card, use mini partiition tool or another tool like that)
