But don't get me wrong, I can understand that no PIM on the n800 can be a real pain for some. It's a big missing feature.
i dont know why nokia doesnt devote some resources to the development of stable and usable PIM software that can easily sync with your PC
such a great little device, yet its nothing more than simple software that is killing me and frustrating others...i know its an "internet tablet," but seriously, wouldn't you maximize your profits (nokia) if you developed some reliable PIM functionality?
in the business world, things like PIM and microsoft compatability are essential, and i feel like the potential of the Nxxx isnt being utilized
GarnetVM is a kludge, and a poor one at that. It's too small, too unstable, and is generally useless. I abandoned it long ago. GPE is not even close to the PIMs you get on a Palm, which can link to each other, sync very well, and are actually usable. That's what a Palm is for, and what it mostly does - it's a PIM. It does other things, but they're all addons. The PalmOS is very stable, until you start putting on poorly-behaved apps, and the browser is one. Any app can crash any OS. If you're trying to browse the web on a Tungsten C, you're wasting your time. That's not what it was designed for.
I'm currently carrying an N800 for web stuff, and a Palm Lifedrive for PIM stuff. I have a T3, and may well go back to that, but it does so well as a navigation device I just leave it in the car. A bluetooth GPS and Mapopolis, and I have everything a high-end Garmin unit offers. I may swap the two Palms, though. What I'm really starting to use far more than either, though is my Asus EeePC. It does PIMs, it does the web far better than the N800 with full Firefox, and is almost small enough to put in my pocket. Not quite, though. I do have to say that since I got it, my N800 is getting very little use.
I don't know if these Nokias are a relacement for a PIM like a Palm.. I haven't used a Palm in so long I can't recall what I used it for... but calling them a "toy" is stupid. This thing has basically replaced my laptop for 90% of the things I used to use my laptop/ipod combination for. Unless we are calling laptops "toys"...
After a month with my n800, I've come to the opinion that it makes a great companion for a treo, but it doesn't replace one. it certainly offers a much better web browsing experience (mostly), and I much prefer it as a media player to the palm, but the PIM functionality just isn't there. I need seamless exchange sync (and search) (NOT outlook sync), SMS, and the ability to view/edit/save/send office documents. I also find that I actually prefer typing on the tiny 755p keyboard over either the on-screen keyboard on the n800, and sometimes even more than a foldable bt keyboard.
The n800 isn't sold as a enterprise PIM device, like a blackberry or palm, and it isn't one. Using it as one is not going to be a satisfying experience, IMO.
There really isn't much that the n800 does that my 755p can't do, to be honest, even though I always like to have my n800 around because it's such a neat toy, if I had to only take one device on the road with me, it'd be my treo, and it's not even close.
