Do you sending $399 to the supermarket and let them decided what food you get? You just: I don't have any food at home so anything is better than nothing.
When you are buying a new car, do you pay a price and let the car manufacture decided what color, engine and model you get just becouse you driving 15 years old skoda atm. You just: WTF it will be an upgrade anyway.

Jolla is clearly the best of the lot. We can't all wait forever stroking an N900 (certainly not if the charging port is broken like on mine!).
I tend to think along similar lines, so I sent my 100 € to Jolla on monday. I do hope for HWKB. I also hope for micro sdxc card support so I can cram an 64GB class 10 or better in it.
Currently I have to phones: N900 and N9. The latter gets used much less than the former. Latter is my "work" phone and the former is for "private use". N900 is alive and kicking,
I'd definitely wait until both phones (Jolla's Other Half and Ubuntu Phone) are released and I'll buy the one that has the best support. I don't want another dead end before even buying it like it happened with the N900/N9. And definitely Ubuntu Phones are getting a lot more push than Jolla phones.
What I need is 100% native Linux including real multitasking. Both phones offer that. Hardware keyboard is not mainstream, and if both phones want to sell they know they have to ditch it, even if we don't like it.
Well, I use debian desktop instead of ubuntu, because ubuntu adds things - things that are a distraction. I guess the thought somehow sticks. It may be irrational, but there you have it..
As for Jolla, I need to get an idea about the general build quality, display specs and battery life before I can decide.
