Raspberry Pi is an ARM-based (700Mhz) portable computer with USB and LAN ports, running Linux OS.
    can it run Maemo?

with certain ommisions (gps, calls) it should be possible. might be easier to port cordia (hope i'm spelling that correctly), which is maemo ui on top of mer/meego. kernel would be different whatever you choose, you would either have to back port all the drivers or make sure interfaces are available in newer kernel.

personally, i would just build hildon for raspbian.

I run Debian on my home PC and Hildon is on the list of packages.
    Have you considered that combo?

    I would go for

    [http://beagleboard.org/Products/BeagleBone Black]

instead, almost same CPU/GPU as N9/N900

with some merproject UI like cordia or nemomobile.
