Please do so.

If it works, you may also try to configure this only for "specific connections". Never used that so I am/was unsure...
Later on you may also try to fetch mails via
-R 110op.btinternet.com:9090 home.ssh
and configuring modest to fetch from 127.0.0.1 and port 9090 ...
Yes, will give that a go.
Thanks to all.

Keep us informed.
As it is now more than a proof of concept

But be aware that those "connection specific" smtp servers will be configured for all mail acconts !?
So that you send out all mails via that provider when connected to that network (and clicked that in the configuration of that mail account)?
Or can someone shed some light here on "connection specific smtp server" configuration?

[QUOTE=macey;1356512]Please refer to earlier post, outgoing server (SMTP) will not accept localhost type addresses.[/QUOTE}

A bit later to answer, but I've tested that 127.0.0.1 is accepted. "localhost" is, for some reason, not accepted.

In any case, if it did, how would I authenticate to my mail server, which is smtp.btinternet.com?
I need to authenticate to smtp.btintenet.com VIA localhost:9999 don't I? Can be on a connection by connection basis but not a requirement.
This has been answered by peterleinchen. The whole idea of a tunnel is that everything works as if you were connecting directly to the other side of the tunnel.

Ok, keeping you informed:-

I tried the suggested reverse port forwarding for receiving email via my server:-
Code:
R 110:pop.btinternet.com:9090 myserver.com ssh ...
But this forwarding failed, causing all of my other port forwarding definitions to fail.
Code:
Error: remote port forwarding failed for listen port 110
.
Without this in, all works fine re sending etc.
Would be nice to have secure receive as well as send but just send is fine.

Mh, maybe better to try:
-R 110:127.0.0.1:9090 your.server.ssh

This should work (for a pop mail). Sorry.

Ok, I no longer get error messages & all ports seem to be ok, but I can't figure out how to configure the client (won't connect).
Note: this is just for receiving email via my server, sending (smtp) works fine.
Help apreciated.

& Client can't connect to localhost/127.0.0.1
(I am trying this on my linux laptop, not N900.)
