Sounds like it's not getting the signal to turn the screen on. Have you checked/tried the following:
  • Make sure nothing is covering the proximity sensor.
  • Tried using the flick-switch on the right of the device.
  • Tried calling the phone while on to see if it accepts calls (and may pop up the screen to answer?)

Well if you will change the phone (so now you don't really care about the files as you can't get them back) why don't you try to flash emmc and after this the kernel as well?
You will surely lose your files, but if it is an os problem you will not lose your phone
Just to be sure the next time keep a backup somewhere else, this is what I do because I flash my phones many times (actually I am flashing it right now because it was doing some crazy things o.O)

I cant believe i did not keep a backup, it is so not like me. I still care about my contacts i had 270+ now have 6 and some files. I guess i cant do anything now.

Im still in 2 minds between, another n900 or a n9. Both seem good but the n900 is simply my favorite phone.
Can you give me instructions how to do re-flash, hoping the phone works ill then do the community update.

No luck im afraid, it is dead for sure. I used the 4 lines as i saw in the wiki page.

flasher-3.5.exe -F firmware.bin -f

flasher-3.5.exe -F firmware.bin -f -R

flasher-3.5.exe -F vanilla.bin -f

flasher-3.5.exe -F vanilla.bin -f -R

Officially dead :'(

But why? I mean there is no clue...
For flashing you need to use first of all this:
flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f

and then take the battery of, put it back and do this:
flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

This is how it should be done! And be sure not to use the -R on the first flash (where you flash the emmc)
