well, not exactly a 'new' version of fremantle, rather a "improved formula" like coke classic after they failed with their new stuff. Ideally neither user nor app will detect any difference between N900 and Neo900 fremantle. New kernel may or may not happen, maybe even optional. Right atm the kernel guys try to get 3.5(?) running on N900. As long as the API stays compatible, I don't care too much about ABI compatibility, since in the end of the day it's a new hw platform anyway. However for the blobs like powervr 3D drivers we need compatibility.

According to the marvell website, they no longer make the 8686 chipset

so, does this mean you would have to use another chipset? if so, could a critera for selection be that it could enter monitor mode and more importantly do injection?

I put my voice for 700 EUR, although i cannot spend it right now. So the question: is there a some kind of funding timeframe or schedule or even rough estimation, so i could plan my budget and be ready when funding actually starts ?

Still using n900 as primary phone since 2009 and don't want another device.

Joerg, perhaps you could put a note in the OP to inform people that final board development will be closed unlike the old OpenMoko process. I wish that open to the point of etching and soldering our own were possible were possible but "Plus the whole device is 100% open, you get all the schematics and links to all the datasheets of the 'free' chips that are used. *), we don't work behind walls." is pretty cool and practical for 99.99% of users.
I don't know that wishlisting at this point anymore is useful but people who think that is still open for discussion get stressed when they think they have hope for their precious feature(uhf/vhf tx/rx!) and end up passionately saying stuff in support of a feature that is simply impossible while diluting the thread SNR and irritating everyone.
Maybe you could also add that this is not a thread about reflashing Androids as an alternative to the Neo900.

sorry, I don't get it. Neither >>that final board development will be closed<< nor >>unlike the old OpenMoko process<< seems correct assumptions to me. Thus I don't see what to state in OP about that. I also would like to see anybody DIY etch their own multilayer PCB vith laser vias, and then soldering it where professional reflow soldering is a complicated and prone to fail process.
"wishlisting" never been completely open to everything getting considered, it always been limited by feasibility and still is (open for that). So I don't get this part either. And it never been mandatory that I discuss feasibility with those putting something on wishlist, thus any explanation why we won't do sth is a mere bonus and no use in arguing against it by users, unless they think they have good reason to believe I missed some important fact that might change the result of my feasibility evaluation. Statements like "too much risk" for example hardly match this definition, IOW it's useless to argue against them.
