My husband was noticing this morning that there was a major increase in network activity. I disconnected my internet connection from my tablet and the activity stopped. Is there anything that I can use to help figure out what is causing the increase in network activity. When I searched I saw some information about iphome, but I was unsure about whether it would tell me anything about what was requesting
the activity or if it would just tell me that there was activity. Any suggestions?
I don't know if there are any network analyzers on ther NiT but I do know that IPhome just tells you what your IP address is and how much traffic you've sent/received but it doesn't tell you from which app the traffic is originating. Are you totally sure this traffic is coming from the NiT?
when I disconnected it the traffic stopped so we are assuming that it is. He was able to capture the packet for some of them. Some were checking my email. We also saw one going to Nokia. We did not get a look at the source of the larger bursts from earlier, but we will continue to monitor

Is it adversely affecting network performance? If not, why worry about it?
If you can do a tcpdump or similar on your network you should be able to figure it out. Note that there are often bursts of activity if you have a gmail/gtalk account enabled, you should be able to recognize the traffic as it goes to google servers. If you have email services enabled there will be additional traffic. Skype will also add to it.

More info would be helpful - what is a "major increase"?
Do you have a router that can monitor where the traffic is going, and how much traffic?
When you write "some were checking my email" does that mean your IT was going to your email account and checking for new messages or do you mean someone was forwarding your email elsewhere so they could check it?
I've left my IT at home, but I'm sure there must be some way to run top and log what processes are going on.

If your running your IT wireless netstumbler may help.
