I went to downloads.maemo.org, selected the button for my OS (2007) and searched for fbreader.

The version there seems to be the good one, because I uninstalled the segaulting one, installed that one, I have fbreader back.

With luck it will be the same for OS2006

Hrm. Now I get an error saying that it can't download the file and the installation is canceled.

    Harumph.

When I have got that before it is because the site was slow.

Try downloading it to your desktop machine and copying it to your tablet either via scp or via plugging the tablet into your desktop via USB. Then use the install from file ability in the application manager menu.

Coughs up an error saying "file cannot be downloaded" when I try to do it that way.

You can't download via the click to install. You need the actual deb file.

go to http://www.fbreader.org/downloads.php (got to via the homepage link on the fbreader entry on downloads.maemo.org)
and from there you follow the obvious path to the offline installation:

    http://www.fbreader.org/maemo/maemo2.php#maemo2.offline

(I note that a browser that shows you the URL for a link when you mouse over it is very useful - you can see if you have a link to a deb or to something else.)

Why not just add their repository and be done with it for this and all future updates?

Woot! That did the trick! It's not finding my books, but I can sort that out now that the damned thing will actually launch!

    Thanks!

Well crap. I spoke too soon. It launched just fine on the initial install, but subsequent attempts to launch fail. No error. It tries to launch, but then just stops.

Here's hoping that the version on the repository will be *fixed* which is what this was about in the first place

I don't know if the version on the fbreader site is the bad or the good - I was able to install from maemo.org which still has the old good version.
