No, I haven't done anything like that.

    mount
    ls -al /home/user/MyDocs/.maps
First command to check read/write for myDocs partition (and filesystem in question), second to show permissions and content of .maps folder.
    mount results:
    dev/mmcblk0p1 on /home/yser/Mydocs type vfat (rw,noauto,nodev,noexec,nosuid.noatime,utf8,uid=29 999,shortname=mixed,dmask=000,fmask=0133,rodir)
    permission results:
permission for .maps folder is drwxrwxrwx
permission for all the folders under .maps is drwxrwxrwx
permission for the file poi.db under .maps is -rw-r--r--

    Please try if
    Code:
    chmod +x /home/user/MyDocs/.maps/poi.db
    changes anything for mappero.

Did you try to start it from the X-Terminal
    Code:
    maemo-mapper
to get some more output to debug?
But also please recheck the permissions of the database file. This is my output for the directory

Should be 777, may be even as root, because of group ownership.

Yes i started from xterminal too. Not a single line of output there. Even after doing things in mappero like zooming in/out(in a blank map though), synchronising the repository etc.
    Code:
    ls -al /home/user/MyDocs/.maps

    -rw-r--r-- 1 user root 5120 Feb 20 13:15 poi.db
Now I did chmod 777 /home/user/MyDocs/.maps/poi.db as root
    ls -al gives
    -rw-r--r-- 1 user root 5120 Feb 20 13:15 poi.db
    which is the same.

I am having a feeling that permissions have less to do with this, based on the fact that new poi.db was created on its own with the new installation of mappero and it had the standard sqlite format(I checked with text editor)

Thanks a lot for trying helping me out to solve the issue.

I am having similar issues with my OVI maps actually. Not sure for how long. Perhaps a few weeks.
Already downloaded maps works, but it refuses to download new maps. In fact it seems like OVI refuses any connection from my phone whatsoever.

I was worried Nokia had shut down Ovi maps and that was the end for Nokia maps on Nokia N900.

However, I had absolutely had n time to look into this issue or try anything to solve it. Just a bit puzzled.

The mappero problem got solved miraculously. I clicked go to button->nearest POI. Then.. whoa! everything is back to normal! Maps started downloading, old maps started showing up along with all POI, tracks etc. Very happy.

OVI still doesn't show anything though. zeebra, my problem is different from yours. In my case ovi doesn't show anything at all. Not that I am much worried about it, I got mappero back. Still I hope you get a solution.

Thanks all who took their precious time to reply. Also thanks to mappero developer.

Just an offhand thought, but let me ask -- are you getting a GPS lock? One of my N900s seems to have trouble with its GPS (although it can sometimes get a connection); the Ovi maps app seems to wait until getting a lock before downloading data. (Not that I really use Ovi maps much, so I don't know if this is standard behavior...)

I use GPS recorder(GPSjinni also works the same way) first to establish the lock, and only then I activate the GPS in mappero. It is a breeze that way. (everything offline)

I have tried with OVI maps and it does not work, even after locking the GPS position.
Mappero works fine by the way.
I am using my N900 without a SIM card: Can this be the reason?
    Regards.
