Regarding MicroUSB, there are also mid-mounted receptacles that only raise very little above the PCB, e.g., the Hirose ZX62M-B-5P. Not sure if this would be an option here.

Regarding FT232 and such, an alternative would be the concept of IDBG, the Interrnal Debug Board:
http://www.almesberger.net/misc/idbg/

It's a small MCU that has a USB stack and manipulates the "master" CPU. One benefit over an FTDI chip is that one can implement additional things, such as remote-controlled reset, I2C, etc. (The FTDIs have GPIOs as well, but they're sometimes harder to use than one may think.)

Drawback: needs to be programmed before it can do anything. The C8051F326 may still be a good choice for this.

seriously,if i own this website i would scrap all maemo, meego projects and start sailfish, firefox, android forks, ubunto for next gen devices. nokia n900 is meaningless now with maemo and meego.
atleast better start a new forum for new age os

One could still argue that Sail, FF, Ubuntu would be same waste as you just lay on Maemo&meego. There are no certainty they survives the winter.

One could also ask meaningless how?

Also, neo is not all about maemo either so I'm not sure what you are saying?

But basically one should not answer to this and derail the thread even further. right joerg?

Well it's good you don't own this site then...
there are alot of people here who don't share this viewpoint and wouldn't be happy with your executive decision.

My best compromising suggestion would be to start your own website and implement your master plan....

Good luck with "ubunto" tell us how it turns out

+1 COMPLETELY agree with asking not to post this stuff here.

Your first post on this website (in 2009) was:

It looks like you were quite excited with it back then and even wanted to put it on other devices It's sad to hear so much changed in this matter. I know this is offtopic, but I hope it will get moved to separate topic and not deleted, that's why I'm responding (and I believe this person is not trolling, just disappointed with Maemo as reading her/his posts gives me impression that she/he is really not the target audience of Maemo - and this not the target audience of Neo900).

So basicly the housing proving to be curlpit for innovation ? Is it that hard or not fesiable to produce own custom housings reusing existing parts available like modifying the board casing part with a gazilion holes etc maybe providing an i2c connector at the back in a way that people can create smart backcovers with their projects etc for a seperate batch then it could be a win win situation as what simply coudnt be provided or is cramped skewed in orignal housing could be provided in custom housing as its already planed to provide complete devices basicly modyfing the parts direly needed . . Just think of it as 2 variants -neo900 and neo900 pro
