Hey guys.

So yeah, this is a pretty big favor that I'm asking here.

There's this site that I would like to "rip", if you will, so I can use it offline on my Nokia N800.

Mostly, I just care to have the flash cards, assignments, and testing junk on my memory card.

Stuff like the virtual labs (which actually is really cool), I believe needs Java installed, but I'm not completely sure of this.

I do have a login name and password for this site, which personally was about a cost of $180.00 dollars.

If there is anyone that can help me by either knowing what to do, or knowing someone, or even a person that you could refer me to, you can have my login name and password to enjoy the benefits of this great feature.

I believe there's such a thing as a program that downloads an internet site, but I don't know if it's still true, or if that even works with today's web pages.

Please respond to me by private email since I'll most likely need to you give you my personal login crap for this website.

Seriously, this is so important for me. I really hope someone can give me a hand here.

I have had great success using the command line app 'wget' on my Mac OS X machines to 'whack' entire web sites. It is great for storing those 'online' html manuals, but note that it can download any file type - jpeg, mp3, zip, etc., in a recursive manner, and stores the directories properly on your local machine so that the links work as intended.

You just have to check if the web page creator used 'hard links' that all start with 'http://' (most unusual) or if they have used the more common 'relative links', like <ahref="../iimages/image.jpg">

In the case of relative links, a simple recursive download of the site will work with no further fuss. If they have used hard links, you can set command line switches (options) to convert links for local use. See the wget help and manual for lots of great info.

Wget will run on any unix-type OS and I have noted mention of it here on ITT. I am new to ITT, in fact, Fed Ex should be delivering my N800 sometime today, so tonight will be the first time I am holding one, but I will look into what needs to be done to install wget on maemo.

It's pretty trivial on a linux or mac os x computer, just download the latest 'wget.tar.gz' from their site <http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/>, untar on the command line using 'tar -xvzf wget.11.1.tar.gz'
then cd into the directory and use './configure', then 'make', then 'sudo make install'.

I'll get back to you tonight (I'm on US eastern time) meanwhile you might try a search here on ITT for 'wget'.

From the sounds of the site you might run into issues because it sounds like it has CBT type material on there which could use a mix of Java, ASP, who knows what. Pop into a virtual lab and see if the URL has anything like ".asp" in it. If so... try General Antilles here, I think you'd be screwed.

(My GF did a 3 yr stint in respiratory therapy... from the volume/weight of textbooks she desribes, I'm surprised you guys don't have manditory courses in chiropractic care.)

I've had a lot of success using an app called Sunrise (0.42j for linux and Mac or XP for Windoze). I've used it to parse entire online text books into Plucker format and then that can be viewed with FBReader.

All that said - I don't know if it will work with this particular book from Pearson's or not; my Biology book worked but my BioChem book from them wouldn't because they used a ton of java. While I don't need the access for Human Phys (already taken that one you could PM me your access info and I could try parsing it for you.

What I've ended up doing a lot of the time is just finding a comparable free online textbook and using Sunrise to parse it instead. I have found that it's actually beneficial to me to read the material from a couple of different sources because each source will word things slightly differently.

Here's specifically a Physiology text that looks like it will parse quite nicely. If you are interested I could parse it for you and email it to you - just to see if you even like viewing it this way.

I've been using textbooks like this throughout my entire degree - I'm a soon to be graduating Molecular Biologist and I've been an RN for 10 years.

Thanks for the tip PinCushionQueen! Sunrise spiders a website and creates a .pdb (Palm database) file which FBreader is able to read. It has some nice touches such as automatic compression of images and incremental updates. On the other hand it seems like the program is not maintained anymore. I also wonder how long pdb files will be supported as a format. I know you mentioned the Scrapbook plugin for firefox earlier. How do the two compare?

@edski: Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm using Windows XP with Mozilla for web browsing. I don't know of anyone that has a Mac computer or unix-type operating system.

@PinCushionQueen: Where have you been all my life? I've spent that last hour rifling through those two sites that you posted and I can't believe how awesome they are! What a great find! I never would have found them myself so thank you, thank you so much!

I'll give your Sunrise suggestion a twirl in a little bit, but I have to be honest on this, I neither trust or respect my judgment when it comes to computers.

I thought that perhaps I could burn the InterActive Physiology System Suite CD on a memory card so I could use it on my Nokia, but it requires Shockwave 10.1 to run the files. Looks like I'm out of luck on that.

Anyway, thanks again! Right now, more than half of my classmates around me are failing the course and I'm beginning to feel the squeeze myself. Your links are seriously going to change my life.

I could be completely wrong but that looks like flash... in which case you should have no (read: maybe) problems using a web spider to rip it.

Google is your friend, just do a search for wget windows and you'll find several people have ported wget to win32 OSes. I used it on an XP machine at one of my old jobs to whack the entire NJ Orthophoto series from a certain state-run website. In fact, I think the windows version I used was called "Whack-Get"

The site uses javascript links. AFAIK wget can't follow those.

Okay, I just found a site that is oozing with awesomesauce!

It's actually much easier to follow than the physiologyplace that I paid a fortune to use.
