I had this in my theme.
Did you try the -main-view suffix on the images?
In the Icons directory, there are 40x40 icons for these specifically, such as the browser icon, which has:
icon-l-browser.png, at whatever res you are using for the theme, and:
icon-l-broswer-main-view.png, which is the icon for the menu bars, which is a 40x40px image. I just used the same icons as the homescreen for mine.

@Ancelad,
is it possible to also make an option for the Ambiance icon to appear or not on the homescreen?
i rarely change the Ambiance settings so it feels extra on the grid
