not bad at all, I wish I could get my Verizon phone to work with it...I read online apparently I have to hack the phone, a little much for me.

If you have the data cable, it's usually just a matter of editing a single string.

I have the verizon phone as well. I spent a few hours reading on Howardforums about how to fix the phone to allow tethering (stupid verizon!). While I can easily edit the string to make the tethering allowable, I am terrified of receiving a messed up phone bill with data charges.

heh... nothing a couple test calls won't tell you.

I'm on Verizon using a Motorola Q via PDAnet, works great. Even get EVDO service out here (northwest Montana) which is truely amazing to me.

hmm..what does the data + voice plan run you? I currently have no data plan, but might think about upgrading to it if it seems worth it.

I think the data plan is like 40$ a month maybe? For an exact number you'd have to talk to Verizon or my biz partner.

I know with the Q it was basically required. With my last phone (Moto N810) it wasn't required though, and after a couple simple changes it had full data access and BT teathering. So certainly some phones offer cheaper options then others. It's just hard to swallow another $15 a month to get access to the data package you already pay for.

I can recommend another EVDO option if you have a
Verizon cell but no EVDO (from Verizon) in your area. I use a small new ISP and have no contract and the cost is just $49.99/mo. It's over Sprint's EVDO network and they have a bit more coverage in most parts of the US. For example where I live there is GREAT Sprint EVDO and ZERO Verizon EVDO service. So, I lucked out finding this ISP.

They provide a Franklin CDU680 USB modem (yeah, ANOTHER dongle). But it's nice for several reasons. First, it comes with drivers for Ubuntu, XP, OSX on the device's thumb drive. The drivers and software install automagically on connection with the computer. Next you can, if need be connect an external antenna to the CDU680. That has come in really handy for a couple folks I know. Last if there was a way to get power to the modem, it appears to the system as exactly that a dial-up modem device. Full AT & AT+ command set. So, I would imagine setting it up on the NIT would be pretty easy and straightforward for the Linux/Unix savvy sorts.

I had considered a powered usb hub. But after reading I thought, WTHeck am I thinking...why physically attach something to a portable device. So Instead I bought a Cradlepoint ctr350, a tekkeon battery pack and no have a mobile hotspot in my backpack, briefcase or anywhere else I want to carry the setup. I doubt it all weighs more then a couple pounds as I am using 2000mA AA batteries to keep the weight down.

I mentioned my setup for anyone who is in that part of the country w/o Verizon EVDO and Verizon service. As well as someone who, like me, was an early cellular users and now cannot stomach the things so I have no cell at all. If I cannot call with Skype then the heck with it...so, I have all the perks of mobile broadband but no hassle with a contract.

There is a $50 setup fee and the first month is pro-rated. For me it was $100ish up front. Oh, did I mention the EVDO modem costs me nothing? But, it does not belong to me...apparently it is mine after a year's service but I am not certain of that part. So, no cost for the modem.

They are new, I never used their tech support, but know people who have and received good results. I did fill out their form to determine coverage as I never trust coverage maps. They got back to me within 24hrs (I think that was automated) but pre-sales responded within 12hrs to my follow-up questions.

I am happy with the service and of course YMMV...

I put down the $30 for PDANet and it works good. I can pull down 1Mb/Sec in parts of the western Philly suburbs with EvDO. Get around 500-700Kb on average.
