Simplified the instructions at http://thp.io/2014/emojifix/ (using the sed-based approach of editing the shared library and repackaging the .deb) and tested both sending and receiving. Works well, but I couldn't retrieve an SMS with http://apps.timwhitlock.info/unicode...s=%F0%9F%92%8B (💋) as the sole character.

Just tested.
Copied above emoji ( 💋 ) from above TMO post on N9 and sent to N900 and vice versa.
Both works.

Send emojis to Android Lollipop (Xperia Z1 Compact) works...send emojis with Android Lollipop to N9, there is characters and symbols, just look at my attachment.

These seem to be straightforward and easy to follow. However, I do not have curl installed. If I try to
apt-get install curl
I can't get it because Nokia repos are down. If I try to install N9 Repomirror from Openrepos to get rid of that problem I just get
operation failed sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
So I can't get the repo mirrors working either.
What can I do? This is really, really frustrating.
(My phone is N9)
