I am considering buying a nokia n800, and I am about 90% sure I will purchase it soon using american express rewards at the price of 260$, translated to around 50,000 points. I was wondering

1) should I wait, will price drop?

2) how can I make it (once I get it) nicely functional, ie any hacks i can put on it to have a word processor, use linux for more media options, link with computer for itunes or something

Is there any way I can trurn this into an almost functional umpc?

Thanks, sorry if these questions sound stupid

You can get it cheaper than $260, though it appears the price for the N800 has gone up $10-$20 at the places I last priced it at a few weeks ago. It was going for < $229 at Amazon.com and TigerDirect for quite awhile.

There's all sort of software for the N800, especially if you stick with the operating system pre-installed (Maemo Linux OS 2007). You can use Abiword, Gnumeric, Evince, FBReader, etc. and over a dozen music\video programs among many other programs, games, and emulators. Oh yeah, and it is an "Internet" tablet so in excels at surfing, chating, etc.

The N800 is very, very neat, but it is somewhat limited as it doesn't run a full-blown operating system like most umpcs do (like the Eee). But even an Eee won't fit in your pocket. Here's a size comparison between the N800, N810, and a Eee: http://media.arstechnica.com/journal...comparison.jpg
