Well. In EU you need to register a TM.
Whereas, in US, you can 'own' a TM without registratuon. This is because in US a TM is based on actual usage of a name.
In fact, to register in US you must prove you are using the name.
So, you are actually kind if protected in US, without registratuon, as long as you can show when (andbow) you use a name.

I would like to point out that it is not fair to let @reinob carry alone the major burden on this donation!
He has alone contributed 700 euros for the registration, which is a whopping 30% of the whole sum!

I myself have only donated 160 euros (and of course considerable time and effort) and am going to top up my donations to 200 euros.

So now I challenge you all to please donate to this important cause if you have the means to do so.

Thanks @juiceme, but I would also like to point out that it *is* fair

I did this voluntarily and for sure don't want anyone to feel pressured by this. I know you mean it with the best of intentions, but really, as it has been mentioned before, donating is a voluntary thing (some people here may not want to renew the trademark) and obviously the contribution one wishes to make is a very personal decision.

For all I care I've forgotten the money. I do hope we reach the goal, but if we don't, then so be it.

    Cheers and thanks again.

    Well ..
    If we don't make it...
We do have enough time to save up for 2023...
    CA-NA-DA! CA-NA-DA!
    if we don't make it...
    I'd suggest a mass maemoan migration ...
got plenty of room in this vast country to spare to set up "Maemo Nation" ..
in the interim ..during the migration ...got some room at the house for fellow maemoan brethren ..just gotta gimme the sacred secret handshake to let you in the door is all...

Hm ..honestly though...if we luckily squeak by ...perhaps the idea of starting to put literally ..pennies... into the pot in advance for it's future renewal... would mean we wouldn't scrambling when the due date came back around...nor would it be such a huge whopping "ouchie"...
We should sanely prepare in advance..

Just donated 100 €. How much is missing now? I might be able to donate a little bit more if necessary.

-Hmm...2023 until renewal in Canada eh?
-hmm...I wonder how much it will be for renewal?
-Would anyone be able to shout out the Canadian renewal cost?
    -In Loonies preferably please...
(I'm sure everyone other than fellow Canuck maemoans are really scratching their heads by now...and yes...the "Loonie" is our Canadian Dollar...named after one of our beloved birds...the Loon ..beautiful bird..with such a haunting call....that graces our Dollar coin...and yes ..Canadians are polite, kind, resilient, and yes quite crazy...so the Loonie does indeed fit...)
-I'm thinking of setting up a trust / pool / donation-thing-a-ma-doo for the Canadian Maemo...
got 8-odd years until it comes due here...
plenty of time to throw pennies at it...
cause I'll burn in a frosty hell before some rabid little corporate chipmunk yoinks it right out from under us in my backyard ...
So ...yeah...anybody got an idea the cost in Canuck-bucks?
