    Hello All-
    Didn't see this anywhere so I thought I'd share that Handbrake (popular video conversion tool) was updated on 19.02.08 to version 0.9.2 with new features. http://handbrake.fr/

    After much trial and error I've got it working very nicely. I will be happy to post my settings either in text or screenshots if desired.

    I used the GUI interface, but here's the main points (for non-copyrighted media of course). I must thank Urho Konttori, whose Media Converter settings I kind of used as a baseline.
    Encoder = Xvid
    Sound = MP3
    Save As = .avi file type
    Specify (only):
    Width = 480 (I let the program auto determine height)
    2 pass encoding
    Avg. Video Bitrate = 700 kbps
    Framerate = 18 fps
    Sound = 64 kbps / 44.1kHz
    Compression = 3 ("louder")

    The final product plays very nicely in MPlayer, and yields about an 85% reduction in size. Conversion ain't fast but it works!

    Canola Playback - I just noticed that with the above width-only specification the aspect ratio is forced at full screen in Canola and does not look right. Video plays correctly from mplayer directly (or KMplayer), but needs different (probably specified height) to play correctly at full-screen in Canola.
