I'm wondering if there is a danger of being too successful. One the "giants" buys Purism out and they conveniently disappear...

They're a long way off 'too successful' imo.

What we're seeing at the moment is a few open source projects trying to capitalise on the hype of the project, and thats about it.

Anything is possible, but in that case, a lot of manufacturers would be in trouble and Purism would be the last of them, as iMx6 are used in everything from cars to medical devices.

As the iMx6 is not a consumer chip where availability is about a year, but one for industrial use, there is the benefit of longevity:

Yup you have a point there. However they may decide stop production of iMX8 since it is not yet released depending on how many has intresets in that SOC.... Hope not. Lets see what happens 2018

And yes I will get the devkit.

Theres a large amount of buzz around the Industrial Internet of Things at the moment, and I'm sure QCom bought NXP to get a piece of that market. It takes a lot of time and effort to bring a new SoC to market so I doubt they would be that quick to throw it away.

I'm sure the iMX8 will do just fine
