Leste will run on your n900 ..dave.
Chenphone you will have to buy.
Both involve waiting.
Leste is usable now...just barely...
Given 6 months to a year more...it should be good for daily.
Chenphone ...as much as I hope it succeeds...
Is an unknown timeline to completion and shipping to endusers.
Big differences all around.

Lets ...see now...
Well...it is meant to be the successor to maemo 5...
It is to run all the progs maemo 5 runs (that are able to port to it ) ..and for the closed source progs ..some engineering would need to be done.
Past that.
It is what should have been ...a long time ago...
Devuan based open source (as possible) maemo...
Meaning the repos for debian arm should work...
As well as other things.
That is the short and simple of it.
It means the bulk of our Fremantle progs should work...and perhaps even some Diablo as well...
And the ability to draw from the wealth of Debian arm.
Soooo...it means current programs...browsers...social apps...games ...etc.
And since its core is in tandem with mainline ...
Easier maintaining and upkeep.
As well...
Leste isn't just meant for the n900...or we run into an extinction bottleneck as our 2010 devices slowly expire...
Moto z (If memory serves)
Nexus 5 (If memory serves)
And other more current devices are on the menu for Leste....so as to avoid our own inevitable predestined n900 device extinction.
Thereby saving the maemo os , and ensuring we have a future ...and all the hard work of decades isn't lost.

I’m not to found/fund/faund/fond of any new and exciting stuff running on my n900. I’m an old school maemo kind of guy. If I’m going with leste. It won’t be with my n900 but some other hardware.
Maybe chenPhone if we will have a Christmas Edition.
