Just curious about something:
When I first turn on my N800 and the Nokia logo appears on a white background, the screen seems to be at maximum brightness, but after a few seconds it suddenly dims a little. I have my screen brightness set to maximum in OS2008, but I can't easily compare how the brightness level in normal operation compares to what I see on startup.
Does everybody's N800 do this? If so, why does the N800 turn on at maximum brightness and then drop down a little?

Mine does the same thing; and I have a vague clue:

on my previous PDA (acer n311), the situation was exactly the same. As I found out later, this was made for the device to run at 100% capacity (full processor load, read a lot of information from memory, full backlight).
While doing this, the system looked at the battery capacity: right after turning it on, it would show that it has more charge that it actually does. After supporting the maximum load for a few seconds, the battery level perceived by the device starts to match its actual value. At this point, the system lowers it (by default - i guess) and proceeds with a regular boot.
This procedure is made for the system to determine if there is enough power to boot, since otherwise it would turn off right at that stage.

This was the situation with my PDA. I presume that the n800 (and most probably other nokia models) do this for the same reason.

If I am wrong, please correct me

Ilia

I believe the initfs sets a higher brightness value. You can use fanoush's initfs & a bootmenu.conf to modify that value.

In Maemo itself, you can use Fanoush's kernel & blset to set the highest brightness or rm_you's advanced statusbar applet.
