Touche my good man....

I still hope for a client that supports THE STANDARD

(See Polycom, Tandberg, Aethra, Sony..MS NetMeeting etc.)

95% of video conferencing today is done using H.323

H.323 is simple, mature and well..everywhere...

Hey, I know SIP is probably the future..but this device would really benefit by supporting this STANDARD.

You'll need to suggest h.323 to be added to the telepathy framework.

This being said, I am not sure that h.323 supports NAT traversal, which in practice is a requirement for most tablet users. SIP supports NAT, but in a relatively primitive way, which explains why most people have headaches configuring SIP. Jabber/jingle is much easier to configure in practice, which is a real plus.

I thought there was an ekiga port in the work ... And Ekiga is the descendant of GnomeMeeting (thta supports h323) ...

I strongly disagree that H.323 is "THE STANDARD"... It's is ALREADY dead. (Why do you think MS abadonded Netmeeting YEARS ago?). Here is some data to back up that H.323 is dead:

http://voip-buzz.com/2007/12/01/skyp...-voip-company/

Basically: Skype is by far the most popular VoIP application, followed by SIP. IAX and H323 are negligble.

Anyways, back to the OP FWD problems:

I haven't tried fwd yet, but tried several other ones (voxalot, sipphone, ekiga.net) with the built-in client. In my experience, you can leave the "advanced" settings at their default. Don't use "outbounds proxy" there. All you have to do is put your username (fwd number), and put "fwd.pulver.com" after the "@" sign. Then put in your password and you should be set to go. If that doesn't work, what is the error you get? Does it not sign on? Maybe your password is wrong?

Thanks for the replies and pointing me towards telepathy

I'm sorry..but I don't see a way to make a feature request on their page..maybe I'm not looking close enough or the noob in me is showing..lol

H.323 can exisit in a NAT environment and often does. Most current H.323 terminals have NAT support features. I also believe most SOHO routers support H.323 or at the very least port forwarding which can make v/c work.

Most of the major V/C manufactures also have NAT/Firewall transversal solutions.

Polycom PVX which is a software endpoint supports NAT.

(you can get a free trial here: http://m2l.market2lead.com/go/polycom/pvx_trial_sw

Are you or are you not having success with video calling to a Windows box and if so what is your set-up? That is the main question. I have found only Gizmo5 to work.

Ummm, it might be dying for VOIP, but for V/C it is the standard and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Yes, many v/c endpoints and MCU support SIP now but 95% of all business and education v/c happens using H.323

Tandberg released a SIP desktop v/c solution called MOVI...word is, it's not long for this world..word is they plan to drop development on it and "EOL" it (end of life=dead product)

I have to admit that I don't have easy access to Windows. All my machines run Linux. X-Lite doesn't work? I really wish the Softphone software providers would be clear about which codecs they support...

I am all set. I/we now can now video call.

1. Got two FWD accounts one for me and one for my wife.
2. Set up her XP machine with a logitech camera ($29 at officemax) and the x-lite SIP client. For the x-lite client set up I just followed the directions (quick start guide) on the FWD site.
3. Then I finally got the FWD N800 SIP client settings correct.

My N800 settings for a FWD account:
User name is my SIP # = 900xxx
Domain = fwd.pulver.com
Password = ********
Unchecked 'use for PSTN calls'
ADVANCED
Connection:
Transport = Auto
Outgoing Proxy = fwd.pulver.com port 5060
Discover Public Address = yes
Keep Alive = Auto
Keep alive frq = 0
Authencation:
Authentication Username is the same SIP # = 900xxx
Password = ******** (same as above)
STUN:
STUN = Auto-Detect

4. Removed Skype and Gizmo from my N800, the default SIP client is the way to go!

The video quality is poor/bad but it works, I can see her and she can see me and we can "chat".

Thanks for your help.
