This is the second device that I have had. The display on the first one stopped working after I enabled R&D mode and then tried to re-enable production mode. The display worked fine in R&D mode. I am reluctant to try to gain root again this way because I do not want to break the display again. Is there a reason I can't leave the device in R&D mode, or is there another way to gain root with the new 2006 Beta OS? I have the new OS already installed.

I have had mine in RD mode since March. I have not noticed any ill effects.

Anyone know exactly what flashers are working for beta 2006. I'm on MAC OSX 10.4.6 it doesnt seem that it can be done with the GUI flasher. I also tried the terminal version flasher.macosx but got the unsupported board error. I also tried running mepis linux under Vertual PC and using the x86 version flasher but cant get the Vertual PC to see the 770 on the usb port, it does show under VPC in the setting that the 770 is being seen but after i select it the PC doest see it and when i go back to settings it has gone unselected again.

If its not a brick your not trying hard enough!

Since I don't run a Linux at home, I just booted from a Knoppix LiveCD that I burned. I was a) pleased to get flasher-2.0 working with no problems after doing the "perl trick" one has to do if kernel is late-model 2.6 and b) quite surprised at how nice a Linux environment Knoppix offered without even touching a harddrive.

Knoppix is pretty neat, i have another live CD linux (Mepis) that i have been fiddleing around with for a while. When i come across a junked PC i put Mepis on it. Be lazy as i am i dont want to mess with setting up a pc ( im all mac based here). So after 24 hours or so of trying to gain root with a flasher i came across an alternative method.

Directions are here: http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowDoiBecomeRoot2

1. Install DropBear SSH Server on the 770 http://matt.ucc.asn.au/dropbear/dropbear.html
2. Connect the 770 to your wireless lan.
3. From your home computer open a terminal and type root@00.00.00.00 <the ip adress of the 770.
4. It will ask for a password put in rootme .
The user account on the 770 doesnt have a password by default so add one.
5. Type in passwd user then type in a password you want to use between 3 and 8 leters or numbers.
6. Now you can gain root on the 770 using xterm by entering sudo su -
7. Xterm asks for a password, enter the password you created for the user account.

all this just to change an icon sheeeeeeeesh!
