i want a device that will act as a 3 G modem so i can get on line anywhere does anyone know where i can get one. i dont want it to be a phone and who would i get service from and how much would it cost.
If you want to go online everywhere it won't be easy if you don't want to use a phone. Some carriers sell PCI- and USB HSDPA/3G/EDGE modems, but you will need some kind of computer to attach it to. (using the USB modems with a tablet set to usb host mode is not an option, because these modems _suck_ power - at least 500mA).
At home I've tried this with such a USB modem plugged into a PC connected to a wi-fi router, which I then connect to with my N800. And also directly into a wi-fi router with USB 2.0 ports and the necessary software. It works ok (except for the problem of lousy 3G networks, far too much packet losses to be of any use). In principle it should be possible to set up something similar but portable, with a travel router, a portable small computer, and an USB modem. However, there's something much simpler in existence already.. a phone! I simply move the SIM card (with its particular data plan) from the USB modem over to a 3G phone, and off I go.
