AVRCP would be the natural protocol; but you might find some that are HID.
The wiimote is clearly the "ultimate" remote available now, and apparently works pretty well via cwiid. But it's not $20 with steering wheel mount, either.
Haha well the wiimote is slightly to big to carry around when I have the n800 in my pocket and my headphones to my ears.
My family does have a TOM TOM GPS and they do have the bluetooth remote at home.. I'll ask them to bring it this Saturday so I can see if it works with anything. (they don't use it with the GPS anyway).
Ah, but if you want to switch tracks? I keep mine in a case so it's a hassle taking it out the case then the pocket just to switch tracks when I'm on the go. I suppose I'm a wee bit to protective of it.
Taking it out of the case, then the pocket? I'd think, if you need to take it out of the pocket at all, you'd have to pull the case out first. But I carry mine in the suede sock it came with, in a pocket, and I just reach in the pocket and hit the d-pad (pressing through the sock).
Anyway, I haven't got any remote working yet, and if it's HID, that GPS one is looking good. Priced well, and fits the number 1 place I would use it. (The wiimote, while less suited for driving, is probably much better for gaming; that'd likely be number 2.) Actually, even if it's not HID, I might anyway... Surely it can be persuaded to work; avrcp runs over spp, anyway, so maybe a hacked-up variant of btkbdd (or whatever it is, the daemon used to run raw spp keyboards as though they were hid) would do the trick. I'm almost persuaded; if I just had more time...
Haha, yeah I mixed them up. I do have my Wiimote and Nunchuck with me (use it to keep my Brawl video game profile around since it's my controller). I just haven't had time to mess around with it (exams and papers >.<)
