Just one other point I would like to make, when I put the same 8gb sd card in an sd adapter and put it in my laptop, the laptop blue screened on me, and its never done that in 3 years!!! so I don't know if having the 8 gb card in the non branded mini sd adapter, has corrupted the msd card.
I just prised my mini adapter appart

I have the same problem, mini sd adaptors made by sandisk don't seem to work (there's a bug on the maemo.org bugzilla about this: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2672). The solution, thus far, is to use a micro to mini adaptor made by someone else.
