Thanks GENEVEN well I can't see how the connection is a problem since it's really fast loading web pages, fetching and sending email and the signal strength from my Linksys Wireless G is really strong. I'm only about 3 ft away from it.

There's no current issue with slowness of web or connection problems at my server. I'm using Broadband ADSL with Tiscali (Freedom2Surf) and it's just this Application manager that has the major problems and refuses to REFRESH itself.

I would normally expect a refresh to at least show the progress so you know when it will complete. But just stuck on 1kb is not right. Also I am suspicious of installation programs that are under 1kb in size, they must be links to an online installation and that is surely subject to the risk of interruption.
I don't like that way of installing at all. It's not the way Windows does it.
What do you think?

I don't think it's an Application Manager problem. I think it's a problem with the version of Mirage you got from the Maemo site. I had a similar problem a few minutes ago, but I had no problem using the repository from the Gronmayer site I mention.

I think we're clutching at straws here.
The version I picked was for N800 with 2008 firmware and that's what it downloaded.

Just tried Gronmeyer site as you suggested. Nothing there that I want. But just to see if it would download anything I asked for a Nokia Catalogue update installation program. It tried to run and did the same old same old, opened Application manager and got stuck on 1kB.
I don't think you're right about the reasons for this problem. Have you ever known the Application manager refuse to update and get stuck with every input of downloading operations?

I think the 2008 firmware is a mess or I've got a faulty unit.

I've been using the Application Manager for more than a year now and so have many people. I've been using the 2008 firmware since the day it was released. Do you have any idea why it would malfunction for you and work fine for everyone else? And do you have any idea why I downloaded Mirage about an hour ago with no problems, using the 2008 software and Application Manager which to you are "a mess"?

Yes I do as a matter of fact. While I was waiting for my Nokia Tablet to arrive in the post, I looked up forums with discussions on troubleshooting and I found a number of sites where people said they had desperate need for help when Software won't run/download/install and even some saying the system locked up after Upgrading of firmware.

I also know that when I buy something I'm very much prone to having trouble with things that nobody else seems to. I seem to get the lemon every time. It's not accident prone it's just jinxed.
I've also seen discussions that say think very hard before downloading upgraded firmware on lots of digital devices including Hard Drive DVD recorders because there are "issues" that have been unresolved with the makers after upgrade.

Another problem I had with Nokia was using the PC Suite to try to connect my PC to my Sony Ericsson phone. It still won't recognise the connected usb hardware and it's not my PC as I've failed to get it to connect on three different PCs
So do you see the jinx there? WHen I made strong criticisms of Nokia about this on a forum they banned me for "having a go" at Nokia. Well I'm not going to make that mistake here but I think it's significant that nobody seems to know why this problem exists. I've co operated and tried all the suggestions received here and none of them has solved it. As the Americans say, "Go Figure "!

You could use ImageMagick, if you like that sorta thing. (I do, because I'm often doing batch or otherwise simple operations that run smoother that way; YMMV.)

Well, just realized what you said there. Policy on itT is to only ban spammers; no-one else ever gets the boot. You still might not want to make terrible rants, as people get irritated here as much as anywhere, but the worst you have to fear is initiating a flamewar and/or losing all credibility.

Plado -

Have you tried what I suggested? Go to Maemo.org in your Nokia's browser, click on the big arrow, select "open" when asked. Try this with a couple of simple apps, making sure that they are 2008 compatible (update the OS to 2008 first, btw). I think there are good reasons why what you are doing now won't work the way you're doing it: the browser method is simple.

Try loading, oh, Free42, and tell me what happens. You should be fine.
