Now I'm happy to just keep my N800 and use my portable GPS unit when I need it.

Wow!

I think has been linked to a couple of times in this thread. It might help to read the thread too.

OS2008 on a N800 is a step up. It will give you free maps of your country or region on your device that you can:

A. Access and browse for reference.

B. Use a BT GPS device to show your location.

What it will not do for free is provide point to point directions or voice prompts. For that you would pay a ONE TIME license fee of $129. I already have a license and it is transferable to a new device but can only be used on one device at a time. No where is there mention of a subscription or time limitation.

Map application is integrated into OS 2008 and comes pre-installed on the device. Map application enables browsing maps, seeing your own location on the map, searching for various locations and downloading additional maps world-widely free of charge.

why do we have to pay for that? why $130? why cant it be a $30 add on? its got a 2 gig storage in it because that software is already installed....your paying $130 to enable the software features that already exist on your tablet. BS.

guys, please, the ones nokia listens to, tell them to not do this bait/switch thing like archos does....i absolutely despise it!

Any GPS unit for even as little as $100 will give you point to point and voice prompts without paying any fees after the intial purchase of the unit. Once again, I can't believe there is an addional charge. Once again, it takes away any desire to buy the 810 for the GPS app.

Never saw that, H'mmm...

I don't think it was in my original Navicore licence agreement.

However, (to others) why ***** and moan about something that we are getting gratis.

If it bothers you that much, don't use it. Besides, in 36 months there will be 2 revisions to OS2008 and OS2009 to complain about.

This would be a good topic for a poll. It's turned me from a for sure purchase to a probably not. I'm ambivalent about the keyboard anyway, since most of my typing would probably be when I ssh'ed into the Nokia.

Anyone can start a poll I believe but the proof in the pudding will come when it is actually released.
To me I think it is a pretty good deal none the less. In the past 36 months TomTom navigator has gone from version 3 to version 7.
And I still didn't see the words "subsciption"...

I doubt that they could put a time bomb on the device that would survive the inevitable, future firmware updates. It could only shut you down from their server; meaning no more map upgrades, that's all.

I don't know if TomTom upgrades maps for Version 3 anymore.

Because it's not a "subscription", per se. You buy a 3-year license.

I don't think it's a time bomb that causes your navigation to stop working, but rather a license file that when present and current allows your navigation to work. That's what I gathered from the language on their website.

Hey guys, I installed maemo mapper and after reading more about it, i'm taking it that you can't do directions on the go? Are there any other choices for a GPS program that functions like google maps for mobile?

You can do directions on the go with Maemo Mapper, but (like Google Maps for Mobile) you must be connected to the internet. With the N810's built-in Maps program, you do not need to be connected to the internet.
