Hello, I bought my 770 just yesterday and for the most part I love it. Here is the problem I've been having.

Any time I try to install an application from the maemo website, the 770 spits back an error reading: "Installation of ____ failed. Display details?" If I say yes, it reads: "Unable to install _____. Component is built-in."

I hope I'm not sounding like a noob here, but I really want to figure this out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Could you give us more specifics? What OS (2005 or the 2006 Beta)? What software ater you trying to install? How are you trying to install it? From the web browser? or are you downloading it to your memory card first?

I recently upgraded to '5.2006.13-7' and I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever from the previous firmware version other than different text in the 'about product' section.

So far, I have tried to install:
- Aircrack-Ng
- Maemo-Mapper

Lastly, I have tried to simply press 'open' and I have saved it to my memory stick and run it then; both times coming up with errors.

OK, so you're runnijng the 2005 OS. Run the "Install Application" program from the control pannel. Choose Memory Card and select the .deb file that you downloaded.

Aircrack needs the Wireless tools installed first.

"5.2006.13-7" is OS 2005. 2006 Beta is downloadable from maemo.org

And with this new version, it will enable me to install apps?

(its downloading right now. 66.7mb... significantly larger than the 2005 OS)

Alright, it works now after upgrading! Thanks a lot!

Though, I'm still trying to figure out where the apps are located after I install them.. lol.

Glacial,

disq may have jumped the gun in recommending that you upgrade to the 2006 OS. It's a nice firmware version, but it has it's problems (it is a beta release, after all).

If the problems overwhelm you, don't hesitate to go back to the 2005 OS (using flasher-2.0) until the official release of the 2006 OS is made by Nokia. If you do go back to 2005 OS, make sure that you're downloading and installing applications from the 2005 OS Catalog (http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog), not the 2006 OS Catalog (http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006) - the difference is the "2006" at the end of the URL. It sounds like you were trying to install 2006-OS deb's onto your 2005 OS device.

Thank you very much, gunite. And yes, you were right. I was trying to install 2006 packages instead. Though, with the nice gTalk support, I think for the time being I'll stick with 2.0.

Now, for a second question. How do I run the package after install? I tried out maemo-mapper and it simply adds a link in the 'extras' category, but with aircrack, I am unable to find it. (and yes, I installed wireless-tools already =D)
