Hey sorry for not reporting back on how the upgrade process went. I never got a chance to upgrade. The day before I was supposed to upgrade I got mugged and the police returned my Tablet this week and so I finally got around to trying to update the tablet today. But this time it refuses to start up! I've bin charging it for about 6 hours now. I will check in the morning and see if it starts up

I am wondering if this issue being described is limited to systems using the mini-SD in the included adapter. If so, I have had flaky adapters for MemorySticks from Sony that caused a system halt & core dump. The card had to be in the adapter just ever so to prevent the problem. Perhaps that might be the issue here? Forgive me is this has already been considered as I have not read through everything here. But, I have always found the most seemingly innocuous components can be the one causing an issue. An improperly seated card could easily be the culprit.
I think you found the solution when you mentioned no issues when the card is out of the machine. Make sure the mini-SD is perfectly inserted into the adapter and the adapter is fully seated in the internal slot. Also, you might try running with the included card in the external slot and see what happens.
