FWIW, I just bought on Ebay, 2 non-nokia n810 batteries and a stand-alone charger for them. $12 total, shipped from Hong Kong to the US. Even if they aren't the greatest, they have to provide extra playing time when travelling, and the cost can't be beat.
Just search Ebay for the battery type.

does anybody know if a BP-5L battery will work in the N810? N810 comes stock with a BP-4L battery and they are more expensive.

No, the contacts are in a different location, and I expect the dimensions of the batteries are different as well.

I used to trade in Generic batteries. The batteries had a failure rate of approx 5% (based on customer returns), and usually have a life of 3 months compared to 9 to 12 months of a genuine battery.

Fake batteries are more of a risk as they don't often have the protection circuits within the battery.

As sjgadsby said. The BP-5L is on the right.

????

I can convert an old USB cable with the correct tip all for under $5 and that is at RadioShaft Tiffany-like price levels.
$2.40 free shipping, have ordered and received 3, no problems with customs etc.

Just to warn you, mine shorted internally last weekend. Hopefully, it was one bad adapter, and yours will be fine. I won't be getting my replacement from DealExtreme though.

Thanks for the heads up on that - certainly won't be leaving mine unattended now. However have been using them for many months without problems.

I did this, got the low price from AccessoryPost, and got the battery three or four days later. That was maybe two weeks ago. No problems whatsoever. Looks identical to the battery that came in the N800.

I got one of the older $5 ones a long while ago. Been working with a 4xAA to USB adaptor for ages.
