Can believe this.
They've fixed it, it'll be released in 3 days. Regressions happen with beta software, it's one of the pitfalls of getting the privilege of early access.

That's part of the beta experience, as a tester, your half of the bargain for getting to use the software before release is to find and submit bugs. Yes, it's hard, yes, it can be frustrating, but that's what a beta's about. You're getting the opportunity to help shape the development of a piece of software and make it better for everybody when it finally hits release—use it!

If you don't want to hold up your end of the deal, then stick to non-beta software.

Hoorah, I've commented on two bugs that are still "bugging" me in W15.

"Internal error: application E-mail closed"

Does not always mark e-mails as `read'

If the "doesn't mark 'read'" bug isn't taken more seriously, I'll have to waste one of my precious votes on it.

My My, you are up and touchy about a little smack (come on it was just a little and I put some praise in there too to soften it up).

But I accept your point and its well taken.
I can stick for 3 days (as at least I have the webmail interface as a backup). Maybe I will be double carefull of the next upgrade - don't want to be a bleeding edge beta tester really. Am ok with being a 2nd row beta tester for my email client.

But in all seriousness, what irks me, is not that it does have its faults and bugs as a beta software, but that a previously fixed problem comes back in a next iteration. Without knowing much about how Modest is developed and its maintainers, at first glance it speaks to me as a careless upgrade path where some previous fix was left out. I would expect the to-be default mail app for Diablo to have a more stringent control on its development and upgrade cycle. But again this is my thought - may not be the real reason.

Just that.

Then you shouldn't be using beta software. [/QUOTE]

Touchy? No. I dislike it when people misunderstand what the term "beta" actually means and lambasting things for simply being what they are.

It's called a regression, and they happen with beta software. When a lot of code is getting changed around all the time, it's easy for small things to get messed up and cause problems like this.

This wasn't something that was "left out", rather, a small new mistake was made.

The "stringent control" comes after the product hits release, not before. At the moment, the idea is to get the new code to people as quickly and as often as possible (the open source credo) so they can put their hands on it, test it and recommend improvements. With this method, get have regressions and other minor issues more frequently than a commercial or final product where the beta testing is done internally, put that's part of the tradeoff for getting new code sooner and more frequently.

I say again—if you want stable, stick to non-beta software.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Does anyone know, or was there any discussion about a modest status bar icon / tool in the future? Was thinking it would be handy for quick access to things like "compose message from <account>" when setup with multiple accounts, etc.

Well if I understand correctly, modest is going to be the default email client. So it will likely have those keys that are already taken up by the crappy default client.

as far as the statusbar icon/tool is concerned... as useful as that might be i dont think we need anything added that will cause this program to f**k up more than it does already

Modest will replace osso-email, so the Contacts taskbar menu will interface with Modest in Diablo. Modest is completely open from end-to-end, so putting together some sort of statusbar or replacement taskbar item wouldn't be too hard.

If you have any specific improvements you're after for the Contacts menu, though, file an enhancement or two over at bugzilla against it.
