Is there any way to get a folder in ANY location to show up either on the desktop itself or in one of the panels? I would like to be able to access certain documents quickly rather than go through the file manager, which is at least 4 or 5 screen taps

that do not help as i dont think any of those are able to aim the file manager to a specific dir...

No, it doesn't get you all the way, but it's only one click instead of 4 or 5 (which I didn't think it was anyway) to get to the file manager and one more to be in Documents...
I think Personal Menu is a better choice, too, but it doesn't go on the desktop. I was trying for the closest match.
