I had an idea, and after some research, it appears that no one thought about this before (but this seems unlikely to me).

The idea is, to use the USB interface of the NIT (or the bluetooth interface, as you prefer) to make appear the NIT as a HID from the PC, allowing to use the NIT as a digitizer tablet for use in drawing applications in the PC.

Would it be possible? Is it already done?

Something like that was suggested previously, not sure if the idea went anywhere though.

This is my first post in this forum. I have read thousands of post from troubleshooting to installing KDE (great job PB). I am a teacher and am always looking for new ways to get technology into the hands of my students. I have two bluetooth graphics tablets ($400 a piece) that my students use. I connect the boards to my pc through bluetooth. I connect the computer (windooze Xp) to my LCD projector and display the work that students do on the tablet. It would be great if this would function in the same manner. $400 graphics tablet (one purpose) vs. N800 (endless functions do to people in this forum). My principal would have to see the benefits of using IT's.

By the way Nokia Nseries has a market in education. The only thing I dislike about using desktops and laptops with my students is I can't to see their faces (the monitor creates a wall between me and the students). Wow! A class full of students using N810's. You guys would have your work cut out for you (no fault of the tablets) but my students can crash TI-73. Thank you to everyone and keep up the great work.

Yeah, that's been proposed here before and I believe it's still a good idea. In fact I pushed it up to official channels at a certain tablet manufacturer. () No word yet on how the idea has been received...

Not quite. The tablet needs to be treated as a peripheral, not a processing host or client.

It can be done, and much more easily than expected! But not over the USB cable nor Bluetooth, but through TCP/IP.

You do not require to install any software in the tablet, only to have x2x installed in your desktop PC.

So the scenario is the following. You have a desktop PC which runs some kind of Unix, with ssh and X-window server, plus the x2x app. You shooud be able to ssh from the Nokia to that PC.

You are in front of the PC. you can control its keyboard and mouse, and you will use it for doing some drawing (the gimp, inkscape, name it). You would prefer to use a digitizer tablet for freehand strokes, and the mouse for selecting tools, menus, etc. You want to use your Nokia Tablet as a digitizer tablet. Can be done?

Easily. In you Nokia, open a xterm and type:

    Code:
    $ ssh -X myUnixDesktopIP x2x -to :0
After a few instants, a white window appears in you Nokia. That window captures all stylus events, and send them to the unix desktop display. Your Nokia is acting as a tablet digitizer! If you own a n810, the hardware keyboard is also captured and sent. You can use your Nokia to draw on the unix desktop screen. I was doing some drawings with the gimp this way . It works. Alas, the pressure information from the nokia is not sent

Side effect: you will be unable to close this application from the Nokia. The whole nokia screen is captured and sent to the desktop. You can't gain access to the applications menu, nor the close buton, etc.. You have to type in your Unix Desktop the commando: killall x2x to recover the control of your Nokia.

    X-window never stops amazing me...

But you can do TCP/IP over USB or BT, so it will work over one of them, with more trouble.

The trouble, as I see it, with all the obvious solutions (x2x, VNC), is they don't take pressure information; I'd assume that's a serious issue for artsy work. Something special is probably needed to make this work well.

What I was alluding to in my post is that it won't work for me.

I'd like the tablets to be able to emulate a Wacom, more or less. THAT would be sweet.
